Fahmida Khatun, executive director of the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), said that the recent severe floods in eastern areas including Comilla, Feni, Noakhali and Laxmipur have caused a loss of Tk 14,421 crore.
He gave this information at a press conference organized on Sunday (October 6) at the CPD office in Dhanmondi of the capital on the damage and rehabilitation process in the south-eastern region including Comilla, Feni, Noakhali and Laxmipur
Fahmida Khatun said that the recent severe floods in the southeastern region have caused a loss of Tk 14,421 crore, which is 26.26 percent of the GDP. Agriculture and forest sectors have suffered the most. The amount of which is five thousand 169 crores.
Stating that there has been a loss of Tk 4,653 crore in the infrastructure sector, he said that there has been a loss of Tk 2,407 crore in houses.
Fahmida Khatun also said that Noakhali has suffered the most damage as a district. He said, the amount of loss is four thousand 191 crores. After that there is Comilla district. The amount of loss is 3 thousand 390 crores.
Meanwhile, heavy rains from the night of last Friday (October 4) and hills coming down from the upstream have created a terrible flood situation in Sherpur. In this, lakhs of people of 60 unions of Srivardi, Jhenaigati and Nalitabari upazilas of the district have become watertight. Five people have been killed there so far.
