Information of 11 million citizens sold for 20 thousand crores

46 types of personal information of National Identity Card (NID) of more than 11 crore Bangladeshi citizens stored in Election Commission’s data center were sold. In this incident, the investigation agency has received preliminary information about the transaction of 20 thousand crore rupees. In this incident, a case has been filed under the Cyber ​​Act at the Kafrul police station in Dhaka. In it, 19 people including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son and her information technology adviser Sajib Wazed Joy and former state minister for information technology Junaid Ahmed Palak have been made accused. Apart from this, 15-20 others have been made unidentified accused.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Talebur Rahman said this at a press conference at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) media center on Wednesday. He said that the former director of data center Tarek M. Barkatullah, who is accused in the case of data theft, has been arrested by the police. Preliminary evidence has been found that the defendants in the case are involved in this work in connivance with each other.
Talebur said that 46 types of personal information of citizens have been obtained through the commercial sale of 20 thousand crore rupees. Many organizations are involved in this. Bangladesh Computer Council is also found to be involved.
 Efforts are underway to find out the information that the Computer Council has sold or transferred to Digicon Global Services, under what law, for what purpose.
Talebur said, on October 4, 2022, an agreement was reached between the Election Commission and the Bangladesh Computer Council under the Ministry of ICT on NID verification. According to that agreement, the Computer Council will not be able to exchange or sell the data of the Election Commission with any person or organization under any circumstances. In violation of that, the Computer Council has sold information to domestic and foreign organizations using various platforms with the help of Digicon. Who has benefited from this and how – is being investigated. 46 types of information of citizens are taken for creation of National Identity Card.
