The flood situation has worsened in Mymensingh’s Haluaghat, Dhobaura and Phulpur upazilas due to heavy rains and landslides. More than one and a half lakh people of 21 unions of three upazilas have been trapped by water. Electricity connection and mobile network are disconnected.
District relief and rehabilitation officer on Sunday (October 6) afternoon. Sanwar Hossain confirmed these facts.
He said that primary and secondary schools of Haluaghat have been declared as shelters. Currently, more than one and a half thousand people, including women and children, have taken shelter in these centers. 30 metric tons of food assistance has been given in three upazilas. Relief distribution activities are already underway among the victims. Apart from this, cooked food is also provided.
According to some local sources, water has entered the locality by breaking the netai river dam at various points including Kalsindur, Jigatla, Panchanandpur in Dhobaura upazila. The entire upazila has been flooded. There is an acute shortage of dry food and clean water among the victims. Many water-bound people have left their homes and are taking shelter elsewhere.
Local residents said that they have never seen such a flood before. I saw the flood of 1988, there was no such water then. Water has risen in the house. I am in danger with cows and goats. Cow tied in water. We are in deep trouble. It’s very difficult to walk, the road is full of water. Roads and houses are flooded. I did not find any dry food anywhere. So had to return empty handed. We need food aid to survive.
Meanwhile, Chandhara, Rambhadrapur, Sinheshwao of Phulpur upazila, most of Phulpur union and parts of other unions have been submerged in water. Aman crops and vegetable fields in these areas have been submerged. The fish farm was washed away. Paved road from Upazila Sadar to Kalsindur, paved road from Ghoshgaon to Dhobaura, paved road from Ghoshgaon to Baligaon, paved road from Munsirhat Bazar to Shalkona has been submerged in flood water.
According to District Agriculture Office sources, 11 thousand 700 hectares of paddy land has been submerged in Dhobaura upazila. Of this, 7 thousand 500 hectares are completely submerged, 4 thousand 200 hectares are partially submerged and 60 hectares are vegetables. 7 thousand 600 hectares have been submerged in Haluaghat. Of this, 4 thousand 100 hectares are completely submerged, 3 thousand 500 hectares are partially submerged and 75 hectares are vegetables. 3 thousand 630 hectares have been submerged in Phulpur. Out of this, 1 thousand 480 hectares are completely submerged, 2 thousand 150 hectares are partially submerged and 62 hectares are vegetables.
