Acting Chairman of BNP Tariq Rahman has commented that fair elections must be held in order to maintain the trend of democracy. He said, ‘Fair elections must be held to maintain the rule of democracy. An essential condition for free and fair elections is a non-partisan, neutral government during elections. Democracy means not only elections, democracy means guaranteeing people’s freedom and fundamental rights. Therefore, keeping the inspiration of martyr Jehad’s self-sacrifice in the heart, we must resist the plot of domestic and foreign evil forces, protect freedom-sovereignty and restore democracy.’
Tariq Rahman said these things in a message sent to the media on the occasion of Martyr Jihad Day.
On October 10, 1990, Chhatra Dal leader Nazir Uddin Jehad was martyred by the police in Paltan, Dhaka during the anti-dictatorship mass movement. Tariq Rahman said, ‘On the occasion of Shaheed Jehad Day, I pay deep respect to the memory of Shaheed Nazir Uddin Jehad, a fearless soldier of the anti-dictatorship movement. I pray for the forgiveness of his soul.’
