Interim government has decided to import another 4.5 million eggs to increase supply. Permission is being given to 12 institutions in this phase. It is said that the Ministry of Commerce will make a decision on the import of eggs on Thursday.
Recently, the price of eggs in the market has increased several times. At one stage, the price of farm eggs rose to Tk 180-190 per dozen in the Dhaka market. Although the price of eggs in the market has decreased a little on Wednesday. Today, eggs are sold at 160 taka per dozen in the big markets of Dhaka and 170 taka in the neighborhoods.
The Department of Agriculture Marketing has recently set a ‘reasonable price’ for eggs. The price of each egg is fixed at 10 taka 58 paisa at the production stage, 11 taka 01 paisa at the wholesale stage and 11 taka 87 paisa at the retail stage (142 taka 44 paisa per dozen).
The sellers say that there is a shortage of eggs in the market. That is why the price has increased. According to data from the Department of Livestock, the country has a daily demand of around five crore eggs.
Meanwhile, to increase the supply and control the price, the two main wholesale markets of eggs in Dhaka, Tejgaon and Kaptan markets will supply 2 million eggs per day, the corporate organizations said. Corporate organizations will start supplying eggs in Kaptan Bazar from today Thursday. The main coordinator of this program is Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC). The organization says that initially this activity started in Dhaka but it will affect the whole country.
Talking to Artdar, it is known that they bought each egg from the farmer for 12 rupees last Tuesday night. They sold them to the retail traders at the price of 12 taka 20 paisa to 12 taka 30 paisa.
On Wednesday, it was seen that Karwan Bazar was selling around 160 rupees per dozen eggs. That is, the price of each is 13 taka 33 paisa. Last Tuesday, each dozen was sold at the rate of Tk 180 to 185. Accordingly, the price of dozen has decreased by Tk 20 to Tk 25 yesterday. However, it is still being sold at 165 to 170 taka in the neighborhood.
According to the information of the government agency Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), egg halves (four) were sold at Tk 54 to Tk 58 yesterday. Accordingly, the price of a dozen stands at 162 to 174 taka.
On September 15, the Directorate of Agriculture Marketing fixed the rational price of eggs due to the abnormal increase in prices. According to the fixed rate, the price per piece should be 10 taka 58 paisa at the production stage, 11 taka 01 paisa at the wholesale stage and 11 taka 87 paisa at the retail stage (142 taka 44 paisa per dozen). However, eggs were not sold at this price for a single day.
