Attack on Manipur Chief Minister’s security team

According to information provided by the state police, suspected insurgents fired at a few vehicles of the security forces in Ziribam district today. The forces also fired back. At least two members of the force were injured. There are reports that firing is still going on near Kotlen village in the district.

The attack comes at a time when violence is escalating in the region. Fresh violence erupted on June 6 after the body of 59-year-old farmer Soibam Sarathkumar Singh of Meitei community was recovered. He had been missing for weeks. Later the situation worsened and the violence spread to the neighboring state of Assam.

Ziribam district is 220 km from Imphal, the capital of Manipur. The district is near the Assam border. There are several villages of the Kuki ethnic group in the hills surrounding Jiribam. Conflict between Meitei and Kuki ethnic groups has been going on in Manipur since May last year. More than two hundred people have been killed so far.
