Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and Water Resources, said that strict monitoring will be started to stop the use of polythene shopping bags from November 1. Apart from this, operations will also be conducted against polythene producers.
Today, Sunday (October 27), the Environment Advisor said these things in a special meeting in the meeting room of the Jute and Textile Ministry of Bangladesh Secretariat.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan said, only polythene shopping bags are being stopped. Any supershop supplying polythene shopping bags will face legal action.
The meeting discussed the implementation of the Compulsory Use of Jute Wraps in Products Act, 2010 and encouraging people to use jute bags instead of polythene.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan said, if people stop using polythene, then the production will also stop. People should be made aware for this. Action will be taken if anyone is willfully negligent. Initiatives will be taken to make people aware of the harmful effects of polythene bags and avoid them.
In the meeting Brigadier General (retd.) Advisor to Ministry of Textiles and Jute and Ministry of Shipping. M Sakhawat Hossain said that the use of jute bags should be increased. Necessary steps will be taken to ensure adequate supply of jute bags. Export of raw jute will be stopped if necessary.
Secretary of Ministry of Textiles and Jute was also present at the meeting. Abdur Rauf, Director General of Jute Directorate Zeenat Ara and representatives of various business organizations.
