After expelling India’s top diplomats posted in Canada, Delhi has already returned home. Meanwhile, Canadian diplomats have been expelled from India. In this situation, the foreign minister of that country, Melanie Joly, gave a strong message about the Indian diplomats who are still in Canada. On Friday, he said on this issue, ‘Indian diplomats in Canada are obviously on notice. So that they don’t put the lives of Canadians at risk.’
In the words of Canada’s foreign minister, ‘we have never witnessed such an event in our history. Foreigners cannot commit such tyranny on Canadian soil. We have seen this in Europe before. Russia did this to Germany and Britain. So we had to take a strict stand in this case.’ Then he said, ‘We have already expelled six diplomats of India. Among them is the High Commissioner in Ottawa. Besides, there are some employed in Toronto and Vancouver. We will not tolerate any diplomat violating the Vienna Convention.’
Diplomatic conflict between India and Canada
It should be noted that the bilateral relations between India and Canada were at a low point since the middle of 2023. In 2023, Trudeau made a statement in Canada’s parliament that India may have had links to Nijjar’s murder. But India rejected that complaint. And also in the last one year it has repeatedly said that proof should be given to New Delhi.
Meanwhile, some Indian diplomats including High Commissioner Sanjay Verma, recently appointed to Canada, were made ‘Persons of Interest’ in the investigation of a case. Several reports have even claimed that they were asked to be interrogated. According to sources, Canada claimed that Sanjay Verma might have any information in the Khalistani extremist Nijjar case.
Then it was announced to bring back several diplomats including the Indian High Commissioner from Canada. And then the decision to expel six diplomats including Canada’s Acting High Commissioner to India was announced. In the context of this conflict, Canada again claims that pro-Khalistani are being harassed by Indian agents.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police claimed that organized crime groups were being used for the job. Indian agents also worked with the Bishnoi gang there. Although India has claimed from the beginning, the Trudeau government has been making baseless allegations to please its Khalistani vote bank.
