Former Minister of State for Education commented that the country’s education system has been completely destroyed. A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon. He said, ‘The neighboring country has created a hub of education, where our children are going to study. By doing this, the country’s foreign currency is being destroyed.

He said this while speaking as the chief guest at the round table meeting on ‘Which way to reform the education system and curriculum’ at Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall of the National Press Club of the capital on Friday (October 18).

The meeting was organized by Foundation of Educational Transparency (FET) and Education Times.

Ehsanul Haque Milon said, ‘Even though various commissions have been formed under the interim government, no education commission has been formed, which is sad. But we expected a permanent education commission. Education commission was formed several times after independence but it did not bring proper benefits. We want, in this phase, an education commission will be formed who will work on education reform in coordination with the Ministry of Education.

The former education minister of the BNP government said, ‘We have teachers who can shape the education sector of our country, but those teachers are not being properly evaluated. The salary of the head teacher of a school is 17 thousand rupees, it is very difficult to live in this money in the current market.

Regarding the transparency of the university budget, ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan said, ‘A university budget is prepared and sent to the UGC (University Grants Commission), that budget is sent to the government. Then the government sends that budget to the university. Now for example Dhaka University is talked about, the VC there prepares a budget. But does that budget reflect the appropriate requirements? If a budget was prepared through a debate, with input from the student council, there would be enough transparency and accountability. As the students also understood how much money the government is spending on it, the teachers also cannot stay in the political shadow.

FET General Secretary Sharif Mohammad Safiqul Alam chaired the meeting and other speakers — Rakhal Raha, Convener of Education and Child Protection Movement, Mehrunnisa Sapna, Director (Education Programme) of Save the Children, etc. Professor Dr. in the meeting. Salimullah Khan was supposed to be present as the chief negotiator but he did not come.
