Arrested from Dhaka’s former mayor Atiq Mohakhali

Former Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Atiqul Islam has been arrested by law enforcement agencies from Mohakhali DOHS area of ​​the capital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media and Public Relations Department Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed that he was arrested on Wednesday (October 16).

He said, Atiqul Islam is the accused in three separate murder cases filed at Mohammadpur police station. He is also named in several cases filed in different police stations after August 5.

After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, the former mayor disappeared from the public eye. In between, rumors of his arrest and leaving the country spread. Meanwhile, the news of the former mayor’s arrest came on Wednesday.

In the context of the change of government, on August 19, the mayors of 12 city corporations of the country were removed and administrators were appointed. Former mayor Atiqul Islam was also in this list.

He was re-elected Mayor in the elections held on 1 February 2020. Earlier, he served as the president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) during the period 2013-14.

On the other hand, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas left the country for Singapore due to the unstable situation in the quota reform movement. He left the country on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on July 3.
