Assurance of US assistance in repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar

Helen LaFave, Charge d’Affaires (CDA) of the US Embassy in Dhaka has assured that the United States will support the repatriation of Rohingyas who have taken refuge in Bangladesh to Myanmar.


At this time, LaFave said that more than 20 thousand Rohingyas are living in the United States.

He expressed optimism that the relationship between the two countries will be more intensive in the coming days.

In response to a question from the religious advisor regarding the rehabilitation of the Rohingya, the charge d’affaires of the US Embassy said that there are currently about 20,000 Rohingya living in the United States, many of whom are receiving higher education in the country’s universities.

He also said that since the Rohingyas entered Bangladesh, the United States has been helping them with Khadi, treatment, sanitation, etc. In addition, the United States is also working on the resettlement of Rohingyas in Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

He also assured the adviser of US cooperation in the return of Rohingyas from Bangladesh to their motherland Myanmar.

The Dharma Adviser apprised the US Charge d’Affaires about various programs and steps taken by his ministry to protect and strengthen communal harmony in Bangladesh.

Besides, he was also informed about the steps taken by the Ministry of Religion regarding the recently held Durgo Festival of Hindus.

The US Charge d’Affaires expressed his intention to work with the Ministry of Religion on various social issues including communal harmony, human rights, religious freedom.

In the meeting, the secretary of religion. A. Hamid Jamaddar, US Embassy Political Officer Anne Dougherty and Labor Affairs Officer James A. Stewart were present.
