30 shops were gutted by fire in Kalirbazar of Narayanganj city. The fire broke out around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. The fire was brought under control after an hour.
Shubo Sarkar, the owner of Gaurang store in Kalirbazar, said that Soya was returning from closing the shop at around eleven o’clock. As soon as she went in front of Deepa Suite at the intersection of Kalirbazar, she heard the scream of fire behind her. He ran and saw that the fire had spread to his grocery shop and thirty other shops next to Kalirbazar’s Butcher Patti. The fire started burning 10-15 floors high. Immediately, the local people and the residents of the neighboring building tried to put out the fire by sprinkling water. 5 units of Narayanganj’s Mandalpara and Hajiganj fire stations started extinguishing the fire after receiving the news. They brought the fire under control at 12:30 pm.
Ramu Das, the tenant of one of the burnt shops. He sells old shoes. He said that his shoes worth Tk 50,000 were burnt. There were soyabeans, kerosene oil, hogla, rugs and other flammable items in the shops around him. So the fire spreads quickly.
Fakhar Uddin Ahmed, Deputy Assistant Director of Narayanganj Fire Service, said that the dumping work is still going on despite the fire being brought under control. The origin of the fire and the extent of damage will be known after the investigation. A fire service worker was injured while fighting the fire. He was treated at Narayanganj General Hospital.
