Deterioration of flood situation in Sherpur, death increased to 7

More than two hundred villages of Panch Upazila of Sherpur have been flooded by continuous rains and water coming down from the mountains.

On Sunday (October 6), the flood situation in Nalitabari and Jhenaigati upazila headquarters improved somewhat, but at least two hundred villages in the lower areas were inundated. Communication with Dhaka has been severed due to road collapse in Nalitabari. 6 more unions of Sherpur Sadar and Nakla Upazila have been inundated.

According to local sources, the water of Maharshi and Someshwari rivers of Jhenaigati upazila flowed over the floodplain as a result of heavy rains and landslides coming down from upstream. Due to the flood, many houses have been waterlogged. So far more than two hundred villages of 28 unions of 5 upazilas of Sherpur have been flooded. And more than one and a half lakh people are trapped in water.

All government educational institutions of Jhenaigati and Nalitabari upazilas have been declared as shelters. Locals have not seen such a terrible flood in the last 35 years. Among them, about one and a half hundred villages including Jhenaigati, Ramerkura, Khailkura, Bankali, Chatal and Ahmed Nagar of Jhenaigati Sadar Union, Dhanshail, Bagervita, Kanduli, Bilaspur and Motherpur of Dhanshail Union and Bishnupur Charantala, Ayanapur, Kansha of Kansha Union have been flooded due to the breaking of Maharshi’s dam.

Meanwhile, the army, fire service, BGB and various voluntary organizations are working to rescue the displaced people. On Saturday, the rescue operation of the people trapped in the flood was carried out with speedboats, boats, rafts, tubes etc. Also, dry food and other food items are being distributed among the Banvasis. Various political parties and organizations including upazila administration participated in these activities.

On Saturday evening, the Water Development Board informed that the water of mountain rivers Someshwari, Karnjhora, Maharshi, Bhogai and Chellakhali is flowing over the Vipatsima. If the rains continue, the flood situation will worsen. Meanwhile, as more and more villages are flooded, the number of people trapped in water is increasing. In three upazilas, half a million people are still trapped in water. Aman plantation, fish enclosure and vegetable plantation were damaged.

According to the Agriculture Department, at least 20,000 hectares of aman crops and 150,000 hectares of vegetable crops have been damaged by flood water. More than 50 thousand farmers have been affected.

Deputy Commissioner Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman said that the water of three rivers of the district is flowing over the border. 5 people have died so far. We are working to deliver dry food to rescue the victims. New areas that are getting flooded. We are looking for him. The damage assessment is also being done.
