Due to two days of continuous rain and the downpour from India, the waters of Sherpur’s Maharshi, Bhogai and Chellakhali rivers are flowing over the border. Besides, the river embankment has broken in some places. It has flooded the lower areas of hundreds of villages in the district. Hundreds of families have become waterlogged.
The Water Development Board (PUBO) said that on Friday (October 4) at 11 am, Bhogai river in Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur was flowing 172 cm at Nakugaon point, 56 cm at Nalitabari point and 526 cm at Chellakhali river.
According to the Agriculture Department, the district has received 225 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours.
The water from the mountain has entered Jhenaigati upazila town. Various educational institutions including main roads, market alleys and offices have been submerged. The local residents are in trouble due to sudden floods. Over half a hundred villages in the lower areas were flooded overnight. As the rain continues, the water level of the river continues to rise.
Locals said that erosion has occurred in some places on both banks of Bhogai river in Nalitabari of Sherpur.
On the other hand, the water of the Someswari river coming down from India bordering Srivardi is also increasing. Hundreds of ponds, vegetable and paddy fields have been submerged
