Israel widened its target in its war with the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, killing at least 21 people in its first attack on the Christian-majority town of Aito in the neighboring country’s north on Monday.
Israeli warplanes hit residential buildings in the city of Jagharta, Lebanon. One of the houses was rented to displaced families, Aito Mayor Joseph Trad told Reuters.
According to the Red Cross, 21 people were killed and eight others were injured in the attack.
According to Lebanon’s state-owned media, it was the first time they had attacked that area of Lebanon despite a year of hostilities with Hezbollah.
Israel’s military did not immediately comment on the attack. It was also not clear what their target was in Aito.
